How to easily track adventurer income in RuneQuest?

Writer: Peter HumburgPeter Humburg

I recently started running a RuneQuest game for one of my regular groups. We are making our way through the adventures included with the GM screen, which has been pretty interesting so far. While I enjoy running the game, I don't know that I could do it without the help of the RuneQuest implementation for Foundry VTT. There is a lot to keep track of but with the help of digital tools it becomes quite manageable.

Now that we are approaching the end of our first in-game year another bit of bookkeeping looms on the horizon. We will need to determine the result of the harvest and income for each of the adventurers. To track income in RuneQuest requires a multi-step process that starts with determining the harvest result for the region before moving on to each adventurer's income. One of them has become the Thane of Apple Lane, so there are tenants to worry about as well. It isn't all that bad, really, and certainly doable on the fly. However, the results of the harvest and omens for the coming year need to be recorded for the end of the next year. So keeping proper records is also important.

This is one thing Foundry offers no assistance with, so I sat down and put together a spreadsheet that will hopefully help to streamline the process a bit and double as a record of past results.

Harvest Result

Spreadsheet showing harvest roll modifiers for 1625. Effects carried forward from the previous year include Ill-favoured omens and a bad harvest. Raiding effects further reduce the modifier to -30. The roll on the harvest results table has not yet been made, leaving results TBD.

  1. Get set up for a new year

    1. Ensure the current year is up to date. This will be used to populate the previous year's harvest result and omens. It also determines the Income Roll Modifier based on the current year's harvest result at the end,

    2. Add a new line for the current year at the bottom of the table

  2. Determine modifiers

    1. Choose modifiers from raiding during the past year

    2. Add any other modifier (e.g. from Hero Quests)

  3. Note the Harvest roll modifier and roll on the Harvest Result table (RQG p. 421)

  4. Record the outcome for the current year

  5. Note the Income Roll Modifier and proceed to the Income Sheet (see below)

Track Adventurer Income

With the harvest result determined it is time to figure out how much income our brave adventurers generated during the year. For this I set up a separate sheet for each adventurer.

Spreadsheet with income details for a "Noble." Base income: 0, property income: 200, total income: 200. Tenants show mixed success. After paying their tithe this adventurer will have their personal wealth reduced by 20 Lunars.

This example is for a noble who owns five hides of land which are worked by tenants. The income roll modifier from the harvest sheet is automatically populated. You get to roll your own dice (whether they are physical or digital). In this case the adventurer's player will need to roll for each tenant and record the result by selecting the appropriate outcome from the drop-down list. This will automatically calculate the income from that tenant and add it to the total above. The temple tithe will be subtracted (unless the Temple Grant box is ticked, in which case the property considered to be exempt) alongside living expenses. The final outcome of the process is the change in personal wealth for the year.

Getting the Spreadsheet

You can grab a copy of the spreadsheet for your own use from Google Sheets.
